As English Language Learners, my students are doing double the cognitive work—learning complex academic content while simultaneously translating and decoding a new language. It is mentally exhausting!\r\n\r\nJust yesterday, during a challenging start to autobiographical writing, I noticed a student putting his head down, clearly drained. I was able to hand him a granola bar from our new stash. That small boost of energy was exactly what he needed; within ten minutes, he was sitting up straight, smiling, and back to drafting his autobiography.\r\n\r\nYou haven't just provided food; you have provided the fuel they need to keep trying, keep writing, and keep learning.
