AVID (achievement via individual determination) is a new program to our school. It teaches kids strategies and methods in order to be successful in high school and college. With this program students go into their freshman year of high school with a focus of getting accepted into a four year university. By their junior year they will apply to five different colleges with the hopes of narrowing it down to one they are really excited about by their senior year.
AVID provides the framework for success now we just need the tools to make it happen. Students will work with college tutors two days a week on the subjects they are struggling in. Each group will need a small white board in order to properly do this. The students are also taught organizational skills and are required to carry a binder with pencil pouches and highlighters to each class to help them take organized notes. They are graded on this at the end of the week.
The possibilities of AVID are endless and exciting. We are starting small, but plan to make it a school wide program within four years. This dream can only be made a reality with the support of donors. The mission of our high school is "increased student achievement" and with the help of AVID we can truly live up to that mission by closing the achievement gap and creating a college bound culture!
