These devices have become valuable tools in helping our English language learners build confidence, strengthen their reading and writing skills, and become more independent learners.\r\n\r\nFor our English language learners, access to technology provides opportunities to practice language skills in ways that are engaging and accessible. The laptops allow students to use literacy programs, online reading resources, digital dictionaries, translation tools, and interactive activities that provide immediate support as they develop their English vocabulary and comprehension.\r\n\r\nOne of the greatest benefits has been the opportunity for students to work at their own pace. Students can listen to text being read aloud, practice unfamiliar words, review vocabulary, and revisit lessons as often as needed. This additional practice helps students develop the foundational skills they need to become stronger readers and writers while reducing some of the anxiety they may experience when working in a new language.\r\n\r\nThe laptops have also encouraged students to take a more active role in their learning. Rather than simply receiving information, students are able to interact with texts, respond to questions, write about what they have learned, and use technology to demonstrate their understanding. These experiences are helping students become more comfortable using English academically and communicating their ideas.\r\n\r\nHaving two additional laptops also allows us to provide more individualized support. Students can work in small groups or independently while teachers provide targeted instruction to students who need additional assistance. This flexibility is especially important for English language learners, whose language development needs can vary greatly from student to student.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these laptops are helping our students see themselves as capable learners. As their literacy skills grow, so does their confidence. Students are beginning to take greater ownership of their reading and writing and are more willing to take risks with the English language.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has provided much more than two computers. You have provided our students with additional opportunities to practice, explore, communicate, and grow. These laptops are helping remove barriers to learning and giving our English language learners tools that can support them throughout their educational journey.","fullyFundedDate":1771365503584,"projectUrl":"project/laptops-for-literacy/10050171/","projectTitle":"Laptops for Literacy","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Eyer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9352209"},{"teacherId":8115480,"projectId":10577193,"letterContent":"My students and I are using the new resources everyday. Because of your donation, hundreds of students were able to experience new art materials and techniques that brought excitement, creativity, and a little bit of magic into our art room.\r\nThe fluorescent paints were an immediate favorite. Students loved experimenting with the bright, vibrant colors, but the real excitement came when they saw their finished artwork under a black light. Watching their paintings suddenly glow transformed an ordinary painting experience into something memorable. Students were eager to experiment with different color combinations and see how each reacted to the light. These projects encouraged them to take creative risks, explore color in a new way, and simply have fun making art.\r\nThe printmaking supplies introduced another exciting experience. Students learned about the history of printmaking, looked at examples created by artists, and then had the opportunity to try the process themselves. For many students, this was their first experience creating a print.\r\nOne of the best moments in a printmaking lesson is watching a student carefully lift the paper and reveal the image underneath. There is always a moment of surprise because no two prints turn out exactly alike. Students learned that unexpected textures, lines, and imperfections can become interesting parts of their artwork. They also learned that art does not have to turn out exactly as planned to be successful.\r\nThese materials were especially valuable because they could be used across so many grade levels. Younger students explored color, shape, texture, and the excitement of trying something new. Older students were able to focus on more advanced concepts such as composition, technique, craftsmanship, and creative decision-making.\r\nThe impact of your donation also reached beyond our art room. Colorful glowing artwork and one-of-a-kind prints were displayed throughout our school, giving students the opportunity to proudly share their creativity with classmates, teachers, staff, and families. Seeing their artwork displayed gave students a sense of accomplishment and showed them that their ideas and creativity are worth celebrating.\r\nArt education gives students a place to experiment, problem-solve, express themselves, build confidence, and discover abilities they may not have known they had. Your donation helped provide those opportunities for hundreds of young artists.\r\nThank you for believing in my students and supporting the arts in our school. Your generosity provided much more than paint and printing supplies. You gave my students the opportunity to explore, create, experiment, and experience the joy of making something uniquely their own. These may seem like simple supplies, but in an art classroom, they unlock endless possibilities.\r\nModeling clay can be shaped into an animal, a sculpture, a character, or something entirely imagined by a student. Colored pencils help students practice color theory, shading, blending, and detailed drawing. Chalk pastels offer students the chance to experiment with bold colors, textures, and blending techniques. Construction paper can be used for collages, paper sculptures, backgrounds, designs, and mixed-media artwork.\r\nOne of my favorite parts of teaching art is watching a student begin with a blank sheet of paper or a lump of clay and slowly turn it into something that did not exist before. There is a special moment when students step back from their work and realize, \"I made that!\" Those moments build more than artistic skills. They build confidence, perseverance, problem-solving skills, and a willingness to take creative risks.\r\nYour donation also helps ensure that every student who enters my classroom has access to the same opportunities. For eleven- to fourteen-year-olds, having a choice in how they learn is a massive deal. They were immediately intrigued by the kneeling chair, taking turns testing out this novel way to sit, while the ergonomic office chair was quickly dubbed the \"VIP coding seat.\" But the most immediate and profound change came from the simplest addition: the tennis balls. The moment we slipped them onto the bottom of our metal stools, the daily, grating symphony of scraping metal—our infamous \"Chair Choir\"—was finally silenced. The collective sigh of relief from both the students and myself was genuine, instantly transforming our lab into a calmer, more welcoming space.\r\n\r\nWe are currently putting these resources to incredible use as my sixth through eighth graders dive into intricate 3D modeling projects using Tinkercad and Autodesk Revit. Designing complex structures requires intense focus, and the screeching of stools used to be a constant disruption that derailed their concentration. Now, students can smoothly slide their stools to collaborate with a peer without shattering the quiet atmosphere. Furthermore, the kneeling chair and office chair have become essential focus stations. When a student is struggling to debug a tough block of code or needs a sensory reset, moving to one of these alternative seats provides the physical shift they need to push through their frustration and find a solution.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, this newfound quiet will be crucial as we launch into our most challenging computer science unit yet. The students are preparing to explore complex network security concepts, where they will learn about checksums and simulate defending against Man-in-the-Middle attacks using Python. This level of logical problem-solving and our rigorous four-step debugging process demand a peaceful environment. Because of your generosity, they now have the quiet, comfortable, and focused classroom they truly deserve to tackle these advanced STEAM challenges. These new texts have completely transformed our daily reading routine into an active, collaborative experience. Instead of silently staring at identical pages, my high-level reading students sit in tight discussion circles, reading aloud in rotating turns and eagerly chart plot developments on a whiteboard. These specific stories allow us to introduce vital, high-level literary skills. Through the parallel narratives in A Long Walk to Water, students practice comparing historical fiction with real-world non-fiction. See You in the Cosmos challenges them to analyze unique narrative perspectives through audio-transcript styles, while The Giver serves as our perfect gateway for identifying complex themes, societal conformity, and dystopian world-building.\r\nThe impact of this project is most visible in our students who previously struggled with reading engagement. Reluctant readers—who used to look at books as a chore—are now the first to raise their hands to predict what happens next. The emotional weight of Salva's journey in Sudan and Jonas's difficult choices in a world without color have sparked deep, empathetic playground debates. Students are actively connecting these characters' perseverance to their own lives, developing a profound sense of global awareness alongside their reading comprehension.
