During studio time, students paired up at the easel to paint projects from our reading program. Afterward, they proudly carried their wet masterpieces to our new drying rack—giving them full ownership of setting up and cleaning up their art station! Students used the Velcro dots on interactive story boards to move characters around as they retold the plot at the library studio. \r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our next step is to integrate these tools into our upcoming science unit on habitats. Students will use the easel to paint detailed backgrounds of animal environments, and we will use the adhesive Velcro dots to create interactive 3D habitat displays where students can attach and rearrange different plants and animals.\r\nYour generosity has brought so much structure, independence, and artistic joy to our 18 young learners at Tony Alamo Elementary School. Just this week, two of my students who typically struggle to interact with peers sat down together with the road mats and vehicles. Without any prompt from me, one student drove a fire truck over to the dollhouse where the other was setting up figures, saying, 'There's a cat stuck; I'm bringing the ladder!' They spent the next twenty minutes collaborating on a detailed rescue story, building a shared narrative, taking turns, and using descriptive language. Seeing them move from parallel play to true cooperation through these materials was an incredible breakthrough moment.\r\n\r\nNext, we are taking our imaginative play a step further by integrating literacy and social studies. Students will be creating their own mini community maps and storybooks.
