All students at our school receive free lunches, but the students are consistently inquiring about how to update the menu with healthy options. This project will help the children learn how to grow food using hydroponics, allow them to share in their harvests, and understand the scientific benefits on the climate with growing food with hydroponics. Incorporating hydroponics in our school community will improve our health and well being while discovering scientific concepts! Hydroponics will encourage healthy food choices with a hands on approach to growing and sharing our own food. The use of Hydroponics in the classroom supports many Nevada State Academic Content Standards relating to Health and Wellness as well as Science. Some examples include: Health Content 8: demonstrating the ability to support and promote personal, family, and community health. 5-LS1-1: Molecules to Organisms; Structures and Process and 5-ESS3-1: Obtain and Combine information about ways communities use science to protect resources.
