While many people use technology at home for convenience or entertainment, in our classroom these calculators are used as thinking tools. Students use them to visualize graphs, test ideas, check patterns, and connect algebraic equations to real images they can see and discuss.\r\n\r\nInstead of guessing or memorizing steps, students can experiment, make predictions, and immediately see the results. This has led to deeper conversations, stronger problem-solving skills, and increased confidence—especially for students who previously struggled to \"see\" what the math was doing.\r\n\r\nStudents are most excited by the independence this technology gives them. Having their own calculator, lapboard whiteboard, and markers means they can try ideas without fear of making mistakes. The whiteboards allow students to quickly sketch, revise, and share their thinking, while the calculators let them explore multiple approaches to the same problem.\r\n\r\nThe poster boards and markers have also made learning more interactive. Students love working collaboratively to create visual explanations of their thinking, turning abstract math concepts into something concrete and shareable.\r\n\r\nOverall, this project has helped create a classroom culture where everyone can participate, take risks, and feel successful. Your support has not only provided supplies—it has given students access, confidence, and a stronger belief in their own ability to learn.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this possible!","fullyFundedDate":1758908346021,"projectUrl":"project/powering-problem-solvers-calculators-an/9676462/","projectTitle":"Powering Problem Solvers: Calculators and More","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Petrungaro","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10238981"},{"teacherId":261170,"projectId":9757381,"letterContent":"I want to sincerely thank you for your generosity and support of our classroom. The donations you provided—prizes for student motivation, items for hands-on activities (the medieval unit will be exceptional!), subscriptions to online learning platforms, and essential classroom supplies—have already made a meaningful difference in our day-to-day learning.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, students are able to engage more deeply with the material, take intellectual risks, and learn in ways that go beyond textbooks. The hands-on materials help bring history to life, the digital resources support skill-building and independent learning, and the prizes help reinforce effort, curiosity, and growth. These tools allow us to create a classroom environment that is engaging, inclusive, and responsive to students' needs (we hope).\r\n\r\nYour willingness to invest in our classroom sends a powerful message to students—that their learning matters and that they are supported by a broader community. And they have been thrilled to be able to erase their work and start over when they believe they made an error and need to start over – with no evidence of the \"mistake.\".\r\n\r\nIn the problem you see in the photos, the students were solving a system of linear equations. They were told that during the avian flu epidemic earlier this year, one customer bought three cartons of a dozen eggs and five cartons of 18 eggs for $76.00. A second customer bought four cartons of a dozen eggs and two cartons of 18 eggs for $52.80. The students had to determine the price for a carton of one dozen eggs and for a carton of 18 eggs.\r\n\r\nIt was fascinating to see some of the groups try to solve the problem by substitution, others by elimination. And then comes the best part. Many people use technology every day at home, but its role in a studio art environment is truly transformative. These iPads have become essential learning tools—giving students access to artist research, visual references for drawing and design, and step-by-step tutorials that deepen their understanding of technique. Because the NYC phone ban removed all student access to digital screens during the school day, your donation filled a critical gap. Now, students can independently look up reference images, explore artistic influences, and document their work with clarity and purpose. The technology helps them learn by connecting their creative choices to real artists, movements, and processes—skills vital to building strong visual literacy.\r\n\r\nWhat excites the students most is how empowered they feel using professional-quality tools. They love photographing their artwork with high-resolution cameras and zooming in to analyze details they hadn't noticed before. The printer has allowed students to access clear, vivid visuals that elevate their understanding of composition, technique, and artistic intention—resources we simply could not provide before. Having these materials available at their fingertips has strengthened their engagement and enriched every project we've completed this year.\r\n\r\nYour support also made a tremendous impact on our fine art seniors preparing for the Arts Commencement Exam. With the recent NYC ban on student phones and digital screens during class, printed handouts have become absolutely essential. Thanks to you, students received high-quality images, review packets, and visual notes that helped them confidently study works of art without relying on technology. Our students were especially thrilled to use the beautiful Mr. Sketch markers, which immediately elevated the energy and enthusiasm in the room. Although many students first approached the contact paper for photo transfers with uncertainty and confusion, they quickly became confident and skillful—true experts who now teach one another the technique. These materials empowered them to create handmade books, prints, illustrated albums, and mixed-media works, and helped them understand design as a layered process, where each element of art builds toward a strong, dynamic composition.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, our class completed a wide range of thoughtfully crafted projects that pushed their creativity and strengthened their design foundations. Their finished works were proudly exhibited and celebrated throughout our school, giving them the opportunity to see their art valued by our community.
