Without students having access to their phones, I needed an alternative. Cue, Donors Choose and my request for an iPad. Wow, has it been an easy transition!\r\n\r\nThe class-dedicated iPad now lives in the classroom where students can easily access it when they complete a drawing or other artwork, they photograph and crop the photo so that it best represents their work, and they email the photo to themselves, to \"turn in\" later on. While many think of technology as digital tools, in our art room, technology also means having the right materials to explore new mediums and techniques. With your donation, students have been able to dive into oil painting using pallet paper, organizers, brush pouches, liquid rags, and other tools that make the process more accessible and manageable. Printing reference images helped students visualize their ideas, and using plastic wrap to preserve paint pallets allowed us to extend projects over multiple days without waste. These resources gave our students the structure and support they needed to work like true artists—learning how to plan, experiment, and refine their work.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for students has been using real oil paints and seeing their artwork evolve over time. Having organizers and pouches meant students could take responsibility for their materials, and the ability to reuse pallets kept their creative momentum going between sessions. One student who previously struggled to stay focused during art class completely lit up during this unit—taking pride in setting up their space, mixing colors carefully, and working independently. Thank you!\r\n\r\nBefore your donation, we were facing a challenge: a new policy meant students could no longer use their personal cell phones for listening to video lessons or music while coding. This put my entire self-paced teaching model at risk.\r\n\r\nThe new headphones you funded solved this problem, but their impact has been so much greater than just providing an audio source.\r\n\r\n***How This Technology Is Helping Students Learn\r\nIn my self-paced classroom, students learn by watching video lessons and completing coding assignments on their own schedule. Having individual headphones is crucial because it allows every student to move at their own unique pace.\r\n\r\nIf a student is absent, they can easily put on a pair of headphones, catch up on the videos they missed, and get right back into the flow of the course—all without holding up the rest of the class. Conversely, a student who is struggling with a concept can pause, rewind, and re-watch a lesson as many times as they need. The headphones have removed a huge barrier, allowing students to customize their learning speed and take ownership of their progress.\r\n\r\n***What's Most Exciting to the Students\r\nWhile the academic benefits are huge, what truly excites my students is the control over their environment. Many students find that background music helps them focus while they code. With the new headphones, they can now play their favorite music or instrumental tracks—a small touch that makes the classroom feel like a space they can truly customize for comfort and concentration.\r\n\r\nThis ability to personalize their working environment makes a huge difference in their engagement and mood, turning our classroom into a calm, focused, and productive space.\r\n\r\n***Individual Success Stories\r\nI recently received a powerful message from a parent that truly captures the impact of this change. The parent of a student named Julia reached out with this glowing review:\r\n\r\n\"You may not know this but Julia has a rough time in math last year and has had nothing but glowing reviews of not only your class, but of your teaching style.\"\r\n\r\nJulia is a perfect example of a student who has warmed to this new environment. She has thrived in this self-guided, comfortable setting. By giving her and her classmates the tools to control their pace and their focus, you've helped turn a challenging school subject into one where she can find success and confidence.\r\n\r\nThank you again for making this flexible, student-centered, and successful learning environment possible!","fullyFundedDate":1754189968125,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-personalized-learning-in-comp/9432564/","projectTitle":"Empowering Personalized Learning in Computer Science","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hall","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp28152_orig.jpg?crop=2085,2085,x0,y354&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1732636342213","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/28152"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_231","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2252,"numTeachers":141,"percentFrplEligible":74,"percentAsian":20,"percentBlack":11,"percentWhite":40,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":17,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"16.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":81.9,"schoolId":231,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Fiorello H Laguardia High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Fiorello H Laguardia High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/fiorello-h-laguardia-high-school/231"}
