These books will help the kids be able to see history through the lives of other young people. Too many children are not reading at home and the goal of our social studies department is to incorporate chapter books into the curriculum. The books that were picked come from different the point of view of diverse characters that the children at our school will embrace. Reading is the key to helping struggling students learn vocabulary and get back on grade level.
Historical fiction books will help the students not only learn about the history of this country, but will help kids struggling in English language arts with vocabulary and reading comprehension. The social studies department knows how important reading is for middle school kids and hopes to make reading chapter books a major part of the curriculum. Class discussions on the books will be a weekly activity throughout the school year and hopefully will help make many of our students lifelong readers.
