My Hospitality & Tourism and Entrepreneurship students are using these materials to practice real-world skills such as creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, customer service, communication, and business development. One of our current projects has students developing their own unique mobile business concepts, including designing and creating their own food trucks or mobile services. Instead of simply talking about what makes a business successful, students are making decisions about their concept, branding, target customer, products or services, appearance, and overall customer experience. Having real materials available allows them to physically create, test, and improve their ideas.\r\n\r\nThe students' reaction when they first saw the new materials was one of excitement and curiosity. They immediately wanted to start creating, experimenting, and figuring out how they could use the resources for their own ideas. That excitement is important because many of my students learn best when they can actually do something rather than simply read about it. It has been rewarding to see students who may not always be the first to participate in a traditional lesson become engaged when they are given the opportunity to build, design, create, and make something of their own. The resources have helped create a classroom environment where students can see that the skills they are learning can actually be used outside of school and in future careers.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue developing these projects into more complete business and hospitality experiences. Students will refine their concepts, develop branding and marketing strategies, consider pricing and operations, and eventually present their businesses as if they were pitching them to potential customers or investors. My goal is for students to leave the project not only knowing hospitality and entrepreneurship terminology, but understanding how those concepts work in the real world. Every day they ask to keep the lights lower because it helps them focus and feel calm! When they saw the addition of the board games like Uno and Headbandz, they were so excited for a chance to play on our Fun Fridays, where they get to choose which games we play the last 30 minutes of the day. \r\n\r\nProbably the most favorite addition of the classroom by far has been our classroom World Map, I often find the kids staring at it or going out of there way to study it. We appreciate the AC, but getting twice the AC makes us really cold, so this heater blowing on our feet and legs really warms us up!\r\n When my students received the donations, they were so excited. Not having to truck all our materials across campus has been so nice because of our new wagon. Also, having a little sweet treat to enjoy during class is also really nice... and delicious!\r\n After this, we are focusing on our academics, applying for colleges, and finishing the first quarter strong. Since receiving the device, I have been able to implement a new lab activity in biology classes in which students can observe the activity of enzymes in real time!\r\n\r\nStudents can measure gas production that creates pressure in a test tube as a result of an enzymatic reaction. This is really great, because they are able to analyze the data collected on the computer and graph the results. They have learned a great deal about enzyme activity from this one tool for the lab!\r\n\r\nIt will be applied to additional labs as well, in both chemistry and biology labs.
