My students are awesome. They are gifted and highly gifted. This means that their I.Q.'s are above average. Their needs are unique. They're physically 13 and 14 year olds, but mentally, they operate at a college level. Their math, science, and reading skills are overdeveloped, but their writing and spoken communication lag far behind. This makes their socialization very awkward. They know they should interact with their peers, but they don't always know how. Some examples: one of my students creates nuclear reactors on his laptop (for fun). Another has read all of the fantasy books in both his school and the local library. Another plays violin in three orchestras. My students are used to being the smartest person in the room, and so don't automatically have the best listening skills. They need to be explicitly taught how to academically collaborate with others to be as successful as possible in the careers and workplaces of the future.
