During our Ancient Egypt project, students worked from approved blueprints to construct Egyptian communities with LEGO bricks. Their models included farms, markets, trade docks, schools, pyramids, and royal tombs. Instead of simply reading about these structures, students had to decide where each one belonged and explain what its placement revealed about geography, daily life, and power in ancient Egypt.\r\n\r\nStudents were excited to begin building and quickly became invested in their group's community. Each student held an important role as a builder, blueprint checker, labeler, or spokesperson. During the gallery walk, students presented their cities, examined another group's model, and recorded something they noticed and wondered. The materials encouraged creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, and historical reasoning. Most importantly, students understood that their buildings were not just LEGO creations. Each structure represented evidence about how ancient Egyptians lived and organized their society.\r\n\r\nNext, students will use photographs of their completed communities to compare layouts and strengthen their explanations about geography, social class, and leadership. We will also use the microphones and tripods to record short museum-style tours in which students explain their models using historical evidence. The reusable LEGO bricks and presentation equipment will continue supporting hands-on projects as we study additional ancient civilizations.
