Watching their paintings suddenly glow transformed an ordinary painting experience into something memorable. Students were eager to experiment with different color combinations and see how each reacted to the light. These projects encouraged them to take creative risks, explore color in a new way, and simply have fun making art.\r\nThe printmaking supplies introduced another exciting experience. Students learned about the history of printmaking, looked at examples created by artists, and then had the opportunity to try the process themselves. For many students, this was their first experience creating a print.\r\nOne of the best moments in a printmaking lesson is watching a student carefully lift the paper and reveal the image underneath. There is always a moment of surprise because no two prints turn out exactly alike. Students learned that unexpected textures, lines, and imperfections can become interesting parts of their artwork. They also learned that art does not have to turn out exactly as planned to be successful.\r\nThese materials were especially valuable because they could be used across so many grade levels. Younger students explored color, shape, texture, and the excitement of trying something new. Older students were able to focus on more advanced concepts such as composition, technique, craftsmanship, and creative decision-making.\r\nThe impact of your donation also reached beyond our art room. Colorful glowing artwork and one-of-a-kind prints were displayed throughout our school, giving students the opportunity to proudly share their creativity with classmates, teachers, staff, and families. They are making connections about how the microscopic environments on a glass slide have similarities and differences to our own macroscopic environments, witnessing first hand how microscopic life interacts with others and responds to stimuli, just like we do! Students have been excited to show others their observations and discoveries; one student in particular has been teaching others the best way to find cheek cells in the microscopic field of view, and how increasing magnification requires setting the specimen in a precise location.\r\n The weather station has brought up many conversations and has made its way into the daily school announcements in the morning! The students read the weather station data, then produce a daily weather update, including temperature, % humidity, precipitation, and pressure. It has become a fun challenge for students and teacher to guess the temperature outside, or how many of inches of precipitation occurred overnight, that is announced on the intercom. It has helped students understand that when the pressure is lower, the weather is more cloudy or rainy, and higher pressure is nicer weather. They can compare their observations out the window to the data on the weather station! \r\n Overall these tools have been monumental with engagement and understanding the smaller and larger worlds around us. The students have embraced these items as tools for observation and data, allowing for more evidence-driven conversations in our classroom and around the rest of the school. The prize box was filled with new items. The students were so excited to play with the twist snakes. First graders learning how to use a mechanical pencil is comical. However, they have learned that they can not empty the lead for fun. I love their learning style.
