Having extra materials like Sharpies, watercolor paints, colored pencils, yarn, dry erase markers, LEGO bricks, shrink plastic, hot glue, and a variety of building materials has given our students so many more opportunities to create, experiment, and try new things. Having enough supplies for everyone also means we can spend less time worrying about materials and more time making art!\r\n\r\nThese supplies have allowed our students to experience a much wider variety of artmaking. Throughout the year, students have drawn, painted, built, designed, experimented with 3D materials, explored fiber arts, and created projects they may not have had the opportunity to experience otherwise. We have also been able to introduce students to artistic traditions and processes from different cultures, helping them understand that art can be made in countless different ways.\r\n\r\nOne of the best parts has been watching students get excited when they realize they can use an unexpected material to make something creative. Whether they are building with LEGO, designing with shrink plastic, weaving with yarn, painting with watercolor, or constructing something with hot glue and recycled materials, these supplies encourage students to explore, problem-solve, take creative risks, and have fun making art. They provide opportunities to practice following directions, making choices, completing tasks, and taking pride in their accomplishments.\r\n\r\nHaving access to a variety of materials also allows us to design activities that meet our students where they are while encouraging them to build new skills. More importantly, having the materials our students need helps ensure that every student has opportunities to participate, learn, and experience success.\r\n\r\nFor our classroom, a well-stocked learning environment means so much more than having supplies on shelves. It can be an opportunity to build communication, social, and life skills in a supportive and natural setting. This process enabled kids to be kids in the learning environment, revealing a creative side to them that energized them at the end of the current school year.
