They get to create their own design, or work from a template, or both. While working on this project, my students not only learn a new piece of technology, but they also learn that 3D printing uses the same filament (the plastic building material). They learn the difference between using technology to create a hand-made project and using a digital plan to have a computer print it.\r\nMy students have to learn how to use the 3D pen first and it takes some coordination to do that, but then they choose a project that motivates them, and they're highly engaged. Some students make geometric items like architecture or cars; some make cute accessories like eye-glass frames and phone holders. Some choose to make more organic designs, like flowers and animal sculptures. Students can decide how three-dimensional they're going to make their work: either in-the-round, or low-relief. They also get to choose their level of difficulty.\r\nSome of my students get so excited using this pen that they come in after school or during their lunch to make more artworks. Some of them have some trouble the first time they try to make something and are motivated to re-make it better. \r\nStudents always take their 3D pen projects home with them, which doesn't always \r\nhappen.
