Our school serves the homeless shelter, a large immigrant population, a number of refugee students, as well as a small, but rather affluent, group of kids. Many of my students have parents in prison or completely absent, so the bulk of their emotional and physical support comes from the school. And while this diversity makes our school unique and exciting, the demand to support the diverse needs of our kids can seem overwhelming at times. Each of these bright, enthusiastic, and energetic kids seeks a better future; they truly care about reaching their goals and helping their families, but their journey is far more convoluted than simple, taking twists and turns--often the result of civil war, the drug war, poverty, and marginalization, and not from their own choices. Still, they dream and hope to make change in a world that often tells them they have no future. I want to ensure that they recognize their dreams as real and achievable.
