I teach in an urban high school that draws students from several neighborhoods in our valley. They come from a variety of cultural backgrounds. In my French class we celebrate this rich cultural diversity. My classroom is unique because its a safe place for students to be proud of their cultural heritage. We often investigate cultural similarities and differences with healthy curiosity and respect. Students learn how to honor and embrace these differences and hopefully carry these attitudes into the school and their communities. For many of my students, French is not their first or second language, many of them are still working on their English skills. Since we don't speak a lot of English in the classroom, it is a level playing field. Students with weaker English can thrive in French because of the similarities of romance languages and their knowledge of skills necessary to learn a language.
