Many of them expressed how cool it was that complete strangers cared about their success in U.S. History, and having these resources ready on day one immediately set a warm, welcoming tone in our classroom.\r\n\r\nWe put both the snacks and chargers straight to work during our deep dive into the Gilded Age and the Industrial Revolution. As part of a primary source analysis lab, students worked in stations to examine historical photos, political cartoons, and labor movement documents. Having a quick snack available gave students who came to class hungry the focus and stamina needed to analyze complex text, while the chargers kept their laptops powered up so they could seamlessly access digital archives without missing a beat.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, our next step is a major collaborative research project where students will act as investigative journalists—or \"muckrakers\"—to construct multimedia reports on modern social reforms and present them to the class. A standout moment was our badge-making activity: students translated their names into Katakana, designed custom layouts featuring their favorite anime styles, and proudly pressed their own custom pins to display on their backpacks.\r\n\r\nUsing the origami paper, we integrated spatial vocabulary and directional phrases by having students follow step-by-step instructions delivered entirely in Japanese to fold traditional cranes and samurai hats. Looking ahead, our next big project combines language arts with visual storytelling. Students will write short self-introductions in Japanese and design custom character badges to represent original story avatars they're creating.
