My students were very excited when they saw the new markers, colored pencils, construction paper, tape, and other supplies. Apparently, fresh markers are basically a luxury item when you are in eighth grade. Instead of me digging through drawers looking for the one glue stick that has not completely dried out, students now have the materials they need to jump into a project and actually focus on the science.\r\n\r\nWe have been using the supplies for arts-integrated science activities where students create models, diagrams, posters, and other visual representations of what they are learning. The hand-crank flashlights have also given students a chance to see energy transfer happening right in front of them instead of only reading about it. The tripod will help us record student demonstrations, performances, and science videos throughout the year. These materials allow me to take our required science curriculum and add some creativity to lessons that might otherwise be much more traditional.\r\n\r\nNext, my students will continue using these resources as we move through our upcoming science units. By connecting Raspberry Pi processors, wiring breadboards, and writing lines of Python code, students are learning key computational thinking skills, cause-and-effect reasoning, and real-world electrical engineering. Instead of just pressing buttons on a pre-built device, they are actively constructing the hardware and writing the logic that powers it.\r\n\r\nWhat excites the students most is the tactile, mission-based design of the kits. They love opening the wooden blueprint boxes, sorting through real wires and switches, and physically plugging a circuit into a breadboard to trigger an action inside the interactive Story Mode software. For them, it feels like bring Minecraft into the real world—they build physical circuits to cross bridges, solve puzzles, and unlock new levels in the game. The moment a light bulb or buzzer activates on their board because of code they wrote, the room lights up with genuine pride.\r\n\r\nHaving these additional kits dropped our student-to-device ratio down to pair-programming (2:1), which has made a world of difference—especially for students who used to be reserved or shy. I have seen several students who typically hold back during traditional lectures step right up as lead hardware builders. One student in particular, who often struggles with reading confidence, completely shone during our wiring challenges.
