Everyday my students spend a lot of time sitting on the floor either listening to a story or lesson, participating in a class discussion, or they are working in groups on assignments. Playing and sitting on the floor is a natural place for six and seven year-old children to be. I use the floor as a gathering place to read stories, to give directions and to transition from activities. Much of our carpet in our classroom was removed and replaced with a tile floor. This large carpet will serve as a focal point in my classroom. It will be the place where I introduce, and review necessary skills needed for academic success. It will be the place where they can sit comfortably and hear a story for the first time. It will be the place where they can sit with their friends to solve a math problem, read a book, or participate in a cooperative game. The design on this rug will allow my students to each have a personal spot to sit. The squares will serve as a way to teach graphing, sorting, and organizing.
