Students don't always know where the raw materials come from that are used to make everyday products like soap and lotions. We already grow sunflowers, pumpkins, watermelons, okra, mint, basil, lavender, and other oil-rich plants in our school garden. These plants, properly processed, can provide us the oils we need to expand our soap-making projects while helping students understand basic industrial processes. Using these materials, we'll extract oils from sunflowers to make soap, and extract essential oils from mint and lavender to create fragrances for soaps, lotions, and more! All while students learn essential lab skills they can use in the workplace.
