Because of your generosity, my students now have hands-on materials that are helping them truly experience science. We've already begun using the beads to build DNA models, and watching students physically construct double helices while identifying base pairs has been such a powerful learning moment. When they first saw the supplies, there were lots of excited reactions—especially when they realized they'd be creating real models and running experiments like true scientists. The petri dishes and seeds sparked immediate curiosity, with students eagerly asking what we would grow and how we would track changes over time.\r\n\r\nRight now, students are using these resources to explore genetics and plant biology. After modeling DNA, they transitioned into germination experiments, planting seeds and observing daily growth while recording data and making predictions. Next, we'll use the petri dishes to examine how environmental factors affect growth and to practice proper lab techniques. These activities are helping students connect abstract concepts to real-world science, building confidence and enthusiasm along the way.\r\n\r\nYour support has made learning more engaging, meaningful, and memorable for my students. Timing writing is important because it serves as a critical, high-stakes skill for academic success, forcing the development of mental stamina, efficiency, and the ability to construct clear arguments under pressure. It mimics real-world scenarios such as standardized tests and exams or academic deadlines where immediate, high-quality production is required. \r\n\r\nIn addition, Students have been using the project donated materials to prepare for high stakes testing and to also create the most calm and inclusive classroom. We try to engage in civil discourse when presenting arguments in class. The post-its allow for reflection and a step back in evaluating which student in their group had the most effective argument. It's a little thing, but it promotes fun and conversation rather than combative competition. \r\n The other picture I included is silly but probably much more meaningful. It's an empty box of pencils. Every year, I usually buy 5-6 boxes of pencils for the year for my class. Sometimes they last, sometimes they don't. The idea behind the pencils is that students shouldn't have to feel bad or embarrassed if they don't have basic supplies. There is always a jar of pencils on my front table. I tell them constantly: borrow one, take one; it's there for you to use. I don't want a student not to do the work just because of a pencil. I don't want to make a big deal of it and I want them to see that it's no big deal to come grab one. \r\n So thanks for making students feel comfortable in my room. Thanks to your support, we were able to use dry erase markers, which helped students practice writing Japanese characters. This hands-on learning approach allowed them to explore everything from the alphabet to more advanced Kanji characters. With each Kanji they mastered, students gained a deeper understanding of the language and its writing system.\r\n\r\nAs students continue to learn more Kanji, they are now able to read a wider range of texts, including articles in Japanese. This opens up opportunities for them to explore topics that interest them and develop a global perspective. Being able to read current articles enhances their understanding of Japanese culture, history, and global events, all while improving their language skills. Additionally, students are highly motivated to complete their assignments, as they can earn anime stickers as rewards for their hard work and progress, which has added a fun incentive to their learning.\r\n\r\nIn addition to language lessons, students were also able to engage with Japanese culture more directly by playing kendama. This traditional Japanese toy helped them gain a greater appreciation for the culture and its unique customs. By incorporating both language and cultural activities, students are able to immerse themselves in a more holistic learning experience, making the class both fun and educational. The excitement of earning anime stickers has made them even more eager to participate and push themselves in both their language skills and cultural exploration.","fullyFundedDate":1738052296032,"projectUrl":"project/support-students-to-learn-japanese/8873058/","projectTitle":"Support Students to Learn Japanese!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Katashima","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8113885_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1707961514257","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8113885"},{"teacherId":6471046,"projectId":6421449,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, my students are actively using these new lab resources to explore biology through hands-on investigation. One highlight has been our Strawberry DNA Extraction lab, where students used the materials to break down cell membranes and physically extract DNA they could see and spool with their own hands. \r\n\r\nWatching abstract textbook concepts turn into something tangible was incredibly powerful; students weren't just learning about DNA, they were doing science. The materials allowed students to work collaboratively, ask deeper questions, and practice real lab techniques, creating an experience that felt authentic and engaging.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the new lab supplies, their excitement was immediate and genuine. Many were surprised that they would be trusted with real scientific tools, and that sense of responsibility boosted their confidence right away. As soon as the DNA appeared, there were gasps, wide eyes, and comments like, \"Wait, that's actually DNA?!\" That moment of discovery sparked curiosity and led to rich discussions about genetics, inheritance, and how scientists study cells in the real world.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, this lab is just the beginning. Next, students will build on these skills as we move into lessons on protein synthesis, cell specialization, and experimental design. They will design their own mini-investigations, analyze data, and connect what they've observed in the lab to real-world applications in medicine and biotechnology. \r\n\r\nYour contribution didn't just provide supplies, but it created meaningful learning experiences that my students will remember long after this unit ends.
