While our garden is still in the early stages, students are already deeply engaged in the planning and learning process. We have just begun winter sowing, and students across grades 3K through 5th have been researching different types of seeds that can be started during the winter months and transplanted in the spring. They are learning how weather, soil, and sunlight impact plant growth and survival.\r\n\r\nStudents have been especially excited to explore which flowers, herbs, and vegetables are best suited for winter sowing and how these plants will grow over time. Through hands-on research, discussions, and observations, students are building background knowledge and making predictions about what they expect to see once the seedlings begin to grow. These experiences help connect science learning to real-world applications in meaningful ways.\r\n\r\nOur next step will be for scholars to paint and decorate the garden beds, allowing them to make the space their own before the plants are placed outside. This project is closely connected to our Green Team work, as students learn about sustainability, environmental responsibility, and caring for our school community. Using the materials from this project, students have already prepared a carrot and apple slaw, made fresh guacamole, and cooked corn—all while learning how food can be rescued and used instead of being wasted.\r\n\r\nAs students chopped, mixed, and cooked, they discussed where food comes from, how it changes, and why it's important to reduce food waste. What may seem like a simple gift made an extraordinary difference in the daily experiences of our students—many of whom come from low-income households where consistent access to clean, convenient hydration is not always guaranteed.\r\n\r\nYour donation arrived at a crucial time, as our students have been increasingly active in both structured physical education classes and outdoor recess programming. In recent years, we have made it a priority to help our children build healthy habits, including regular exercise and proper hydration. However, our efforts have often been limited by practical challenges. Many of our students do not have personal water bottles, and our aging fountains frequently fail to supply the fresh, cold water that active children need. As a result, far too many students would attempt to participate in classes, sports, and games without being adequately hydrated.\r\n\r\nYour support changed that immediately. With bottled water available at every class session, students were able to focus better, move more confidently, and fully participate in physical activities without fatigue. Teachers noticed that students were more alert, more energized, and less likely to complain of dizziness, nausea, or headaches—issues that we see all too often when hydration is lacking. Even more importantly, having water physically present served as a valuable teaching tool. Our physical education instructors used the opportunity to talk about why hydration matters, how water supports muscle function, and how staying hydrated improves both academic and athletic performance. These lessons may seem small, but for growing children, especially those who may not receive this kind of health education at home, they are foundational.\r\n\r\nThe positive effects extended beyond our gymnasium walls. Children began to ask questions about drinking more water during the school day, and many even requested additional bottles to take home. Parents told us their children encouraged family members to drink water more regularly, sharing what they had learned in class. What started with your donation grew into a broader, school-wide, health-focused dialogue—something truly invaluable for a community like ours, where families often face limited resources and competing daily priorities.\r\n\r\nYour generosity also carried emotional weight for our students. Many of them are used to making do with less or feeling that certain supports simply aren't available to them. When they saw stacks of bottled water provided \"just for them,\" they felt cared for, supported, and valued. That sense of being seen made a tangible impact on their attitude toward physical education, school participation, and even teamwork.\r\n\r\nIn short, your donation did far more than quench thirst—it empowered our students. It reminded them that their health matters, that their efforts matter, and that people in the wider community believe in their potential.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your kindness and your investment in the well-being of our children. Students use it to document science experiments, group projects, and special celebrations—transforming their learning into visual storytelling.\r\n\r\nMany of our donors might use technology every day, but in our classroom, this technology does so much more—it helps students see themselves as creators and documentarians of their learning. Taking photos allows my students to reflect on their progress, celebrate teamwork, and build pride in their accomplishments.\r\n\r\nWhat excites them most is watching the photos develop before their eyes!
