My students love stories and books! The problem is that we do not have the appropriate level books to help teach them to read. My students are learning to read- that means we need books at the kindergarten- and even pre-kindergarten- level. The books we have in our classroom are too advanced for our students. This causes frustration within our students and a lack of motivation. With the appropriate level of books we can really help our students learn to read. My students needs guided reading books that will help teach them letter sounds, basic sight words and how to read basic sentence patterned book.
To help motivate them, we are hoping to get reading games. With these games, students can learn letter sounds, blending sounds, vocabulary and word recognition. Children love to play! So why not use this “play time” to help facilitate our learning? These games are engaging and motivating. They can work in small groups or in partnerships. These games will be in a reading center in our classroom. They will be accesible to our students throughout the entire day. They can be a “go to” center once they have completed an assignment .
With all this exposure to literature at their appropriate level we are hoping our students make significant gains in reading this school year.
