Students are practicing making predictions, identifying characters and settings, asking questions while they read, and making connections between texts and their own lives. Many of the books also support social-emotional learning by encouraging empathy, perseverance, kindness, and confidence. The variety of topics and reading levels has allowed every child to find books that feel both accessible and exciting.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is a joyful and active experience. Students gather together for read-alouds, partner reading, and independent reading time each day. It is wonderful to see children eagerly reaching for books, sharing favorite pages with classmates, and discussing stories with enthusiasm. Our classroom has become a community of readers where students feel proud of themselves and motivated to keep learning.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were once hesitant readers are especially enjoying the new collection. Another student asked me to put a book to the side for him so that no one else borrowed it before he could. One girl came looking for another as soon as she finished saying \"This one was really good.\" They are reading a lot more and are enthusiastic about reading. \r\n\r\nThe quality of their book reports for their English teacher has also improved drastically. Students now actively participate in maintaining a \"clean room, healthy room\" routine. We use disinfecting wipes and paper towels daily to clean desks, shared manipulatives, and classroom materials. This has become part of our classroom culture—students take responsibility for their learning space and understand that a clean environment supports everyone's success.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were genuinely excited. They immediately noticed the wipes and cleaning supplies and began asking how they could help use them. Many of them wanted to be \"classroom helpers\" right away, taking pride in keeping their space neat and organized. It quickly turned into a shared responsibility that made them feel trusted and important in the classroom community.\r\n\r\nOne meaningful moment was when students independently began cleaning shared math and reading materials after group work without being reminded. It showed how quickly they understood the connection between cleanliness, health, and respect for one another.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we will continue building these habits as part of our daily classroom routines. Students will rotate responsibilities for cleaning high-touch areas and will also track how maintaining a clean environment helps us stay healthy and present in school. Our goal is to reduce germs, support consistent attendance, and create a comfortable learning environment where every child can focus, participate, and thrive.","fullyFundedDate":1723671275680,"projectUrl":"project/a-clean-room-is-a-healthy-room/8630038/","projectTitle":"A Clean Room Is A Healthy Room!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. General-Mendez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp791906_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1471910038462","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/teresageneralmendez"},{"teacherId":791906,"projectId":9463853,"letterContent":"This project has had a meaningful impact on how our classroom functions and how my students learn together each day. My general education and ENL students use this space to work side by side, supporting one another as they build both academic skills and language. One powerful moment was during a recent reading lesson when students gathered on the rug to share their thinking about a story—many of my ENL students felt more comfortable speaking and participating in this shared space, using the easel to point to visuals and vocabulary we had learned together.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were immediately excited and eager to use them. They quickly understood that the rugs signaled an important part of our daily routine—a time to come together, listen, share, and learn as a community. The easel has become a central teaching tool, helping me model writing, display anchor charts, and guide instruction in a way that is visible and accessible to all learners. Their enthusiasm has translated into smoother transitions and more focused, engaged learning during group time.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we will continue to build on this structure as we deepen our work in reading, writing, and math. Students will use the meeting area for partner discussions, collaborative problem-solving, and interactive mini-lessons that support their independent goals. This dedicated space is helping foster a strong classroom community and a love of learning, as students feel comfortable, supported, and ready to take risks. My 30 second graders take pride in caring for their classroom, and the new cleaning supplies have become part of our daily routine. Each morning and afternoon, students help wipe down desks, shared materials, and learning spaces, building a sense of responsibility and community. One special moment that stood out was when a student proudly said, \"Our classroom feels like home,\" after helping clean their table area—showing just how much they value a safe and comfortable space. Having tissues readily available has also helped students practice healthy habits independently, minimizing disruptions and keeping everyone focused on learning.\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, students were genuinely excited and eager to help organize and use them right away. They understood that these supplies were helping keep them safe and comfortable, which gave them a sense of ownership over their environment. Looking ahead, we are continuing to build on this responsibility by connecting our classroom routines to lessons about community and citizenship. Students are learning that taking care of shared spaces is an important part of being a member of a community, both in school and beyond. With Scholastic News Grade 2 and Science Spin magazines, my students will be able to explore topics that connect directly to our curriculum, including communities, holidays, animals, weather, and important world events like elections and the space program. These resources make learning feel relevant and exciting, especially for my second graders who are naturally curious about the world around them. For my English language learners, the combination of visuals, accessible text, and engaging topics will support both comprehension and vocabulary development in a powerful way.\r\n\r\nIn the classroom, these magazines will become an essential part of our print-rich environment and daily instruction. Students will use them during whole-group lessons, small-group discussions, and independent reading time, allowing for repeated exposure to nonfiction text features such as headings, captions, and photographs. The addition of Science Spin will spark deeper conversations about scientific discoveries and encourage students to ask questions, think critically, and share their ideas with peers. Overall, these materials will help foster a love of reading while building the foundational literacy and content knowledge students need to succeed.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active, student-centered experience. You'll see students gathered in small groups for guided reading, partners turning and talking about a story, and individuals independently exploring books that reflect their interests and cultures. We revisit texts multiple times to build fluency and confidence, and students are encouraged to share their thinking through discussions, drawings, and writing. There is a strong sense of excitement around reading, and students are eager to participate and express their ideas.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were previously hesitant readers have really come alive with these new books. For example, some of my English language learners are especially engaged because they see aspects of their own cultures and experiences reflected in the stories, which helps them make deeper connections. Others are excited by the colorful illustrations and relatable characters, which motivate them to spend more time reading and talking about books with their peers. It has been incredibly rewarding to see students build confidence, take risks, and truly enjoy reading in a way they hadn't before.","fullyFundedDate":1683676858501,"projectUrl":"project/extra-extra-read-all-about-it/7370084/","projectTitle":"Extra Extra Read All About It!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. General-Mendez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp791906_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1471910038462","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/teresageneralmendez"},{"teacherId":10308422,"projectId":9816355,"letterContent":"Thank you for making this meaningful relief sculpture project possible for my 5th-grade students.
