The illustrations help them engage more deeply with the plot, the emotions, and the tension of each moment in the story. Students who often struggle to connect with traditional novels are now eagerly discussing scenes, analyzing artistic choices, and making thoughtful connections between text and image. These books have made a remarkable difference, especially for my Emergent Bilingual (EB) students. Through these texts, we've introduced essential skills such as making inferences, identifying theme and tone, and building academic vocabulary in context. Many of the books offer culturally relevant content or dual-language support, which helps students feel seen and celebrated. They're not just reading—they're making personal connections, asking deeper questions, and growing more confident as readers and thinkers.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading has become more collaborative and joyful. Students engage in partner reading, book circles, and creative response activities that give them space to express their ideas in English and their home languages. One of my EB students, who was once hesitant to read aloud, now volunteers to lead discussions about character choices and story structure. Another group of students has started recommending books to each other, proudly sharing which stories made them laugh or reflect on their own lives. Upon grading the essays, I could see that they were right.
