One of the many consequences of COVID-19 was our district mandating virtual learning. For about a year and a half, students were out of the classroom, and teachers scrambled to create online materials. Despite trying our best to provide the same instruction online as in the classroom, it was just not the same virtually. Throughout that year and a half of learning outside of the classroom, we saw most students struggled and many fell behind. Research has shown that students retain more information, and are better able to demonstrate learning when they complete assignments on paper. Access to paper for guided notes, graphs, proofs, isolating variables, etc. will help us spot student deficiencies and make up for lost learning. This same sort of work cannot be shown online. Our school still largely prioritizes virtual assignments, but we can see that students benefit from writing out their work, especially in mathematics. Please consider helping us provide these materials for students.
