These activities give students the opportunity to express their creativity while practicing fine motor skills, following directions, and learning about cultural traditions. The headphones have also been a valuable addition to our classroom, allowing students to work more independently and focus during daily computer-based assignments.\r\n\r\nOur students are excited to have materials that allow them to build, create, and explore their ideas in new ways. We were able to purchase so many useful cooking tools, and it has made all the difference. Our class has made an array of fun foods. We have made casual foods like funnel cakes from scratch, and we have made more technically sophisticated dishes such as potato dauphinoise. We even had a chocolate chip cookies bake off, with staff invited to come judge our results. Some of my students will choose to come to school when they do not want to, specifically so we can cook together. Their passion shows.\r\n\r\nI want to share our most recent lesson with you. We made potato dauphinoise, a classic French dish made with potatoes, cream, fresh thyme, seasonings, and grated gruyere. Students were introduced to gruyere, a cheese they had never had before. We used a tool called a mandoline, which gave me the opportunity to explain how it works, how to safely use it, and the benefits of slicing a food with the exact same thickness each time. Our students learned how to use a cheese grater. They learned how to prepare fresh thyme. They also learned how to line a baking pan with parchment, as well as how to layer a dish. Seeing as we were working with potatoes, we connected our cooking to a social studies lesson about the Irish potato famine. Students were very proud of their work, and they enjoyed the food we baked. It is rewarding to see their confidence grow with each new skill mastered.
