In the classroom, students will learn the basics of navigating using a compass and maps then apply those skills in the real world. Students will go to the soccer field and will have to locate points marked out on the field using only compass headings while wearing a hood. They will have a "buddy" to help them from getting too far off course. I've taught this before to regular and special education students. I have found that most students get it and those that get it really enjoy it. It improves map skills and is great for their self-esteem. Most of my students have little to be proud of. Knowing this skill makes them special and gives them a little confidence.
