The new books have given my students opportunities to strengthen important skills such as identifying the main idea, analyzing characters, making inferences, finding evidence to support their thinking, understanding theme, and connecting events in a story to their own lives and the world around them.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is much more than simply reading pages and answering questions. Students participate in discussions, make predictions, annotate important passages, work collaboratively, and share their ideas about characters and events. We use literature to encourage curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, and thoughtful conversations. Students are learning that there can be different perspectives and interpretations of the same story, and they are learning how to support their ideas with evidence from the text.\r\n\r\nThe new books have been especially exciting for students who may not always consider themselves strong or enthusiastic readers. Having engaging, age-appropriate novels available allows students to find characters and stories that capture their attention. I have seen students become excited to talk about what they are reading, recommend books to their classmates, and look forward to finding out what happens next.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these books are helping my students see themselves as readers. Every student deserves the opportunity to experience the excitement of getting lost in a good story while also developing the literacy skills they need to be successful. Having a dedicated, sturdy surface instead of working on the floor gives them a clean space to gather, collaborate, and test out complex ideas.\r\n\r\nThese tables will be used primarily for open-ended free builds, giving my GT students the creative freedom they thrive on. High-ability learners need unstructured time to experiment, take risks, and push their spatial reasoning skills without rigid instructions. Students tested their designs, made improvements, and thought critically about how engineers solve real-world problems. When the materials first arrived, the excitement was immediate—students couldn't wait to start building, testing, and creating.\r\nYour support also allowed students to construct working flashlights using binder clips, copper tape, 3V batteries, and popsicle sticks. They proudly used their handmade flashlights to communicate with Morse code, making connections between circuitry and real-world communication systems. In addition, students designed custom keychains using 3D modeling software and brought their ideas to life through 3D printing. Watching their digital designs transform into tangible products was an unforgettable moment that reinforced creativity, problem-solving, and perseverance.\r\nWe also explored pneumatics by launching straw rockets powered by air pressure, and students investigated potential and kinetic energy by building catapults to compete in both target and distance challenges. These high-energy competitions were a huge hit and sparked meaningful conversations about force and motion.
