Students learned about the shelter animals they were helping, gained insight into animal care, and discovered a variety of careers that support animal health and welfare. Seeing their classmates celebrate these accomplishments reinforces the idea that effort, perseverance, and growth matter. Each student will have a festive book to take home and call their own. For some of my students, this may be the first book they have ever owned. Having a personal book builds pride, responsibility, and motivation to read, reread, and share stories with their families.\r\n\r\nThe books also provide opportunities to strengthen important first-grade skills such as phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, sequencing, and identifying characters and settings. The Earth Day and 100th Day books added to our classroom library will connect reading to our curriculum while giving students even more engaging choices to explore.\r\n\r\nMy students are especially excited when they find a book that captures their imagination. Watching a child who may have been hesitant to read become excited to choose a book, share it with a friend, or read it again is incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students more than books.
