Knowing they have choices, knowing they can advocate for their sensory needs, and knowing that they can regulate their own bodies IS what enables them to learn. Every person, adults included, have a sensory profile. The individual sensory profiles (e.g. sensitivity, seeking, avoidance, etc.) is never the problem. These differences only impede us when we can't regulate. For kids, that regulation has to be taught through strategies. Which is exactly what you all provided for them.\r\n\r\nFor a student with severe sound sensitivity, wearing noise buffering headphones is the only time they feel calm all day. For a student who has oral seeking behaviors, an oral chewy is the only way they can focus. For a student who seeks movement, a therapy ball provides their bodies the input they need to actually be present during instruction. \r\nWhen I introduce these tools to the kids, I give them a visual choice board. This has icons of each tool for them to choose from. We document what strategies help wake their bodies up or calm their bodies down. We monitor which tools help us focus and which help us reset after frustration. These may not seem like major adjustments, but for a kid whose sensory needs are finally met, these make all the difference in the world.\r\n\r\nI cannot thank you enough to empowering our kids to regulate their bodies at school. It makes all the difference in their learning experience and confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1767221440302,"projectUrl":"project/wiggle-focus-learn-sensory-supports-f/9880986/","projectTitle":"Wiggle, Focus, Learn: Sensory Supports for Southwest DC Students","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cucinotta, OTR/L","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3940198_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1762487431637","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3940198"},{"teacherId":3043120,"projectId":9904582,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation to my Donors Choose project.
