Everyday, we experience the world around us through senses (vision, hearing, taste, touch, smell, and movement). Our ability to process this sensory information and interact in a positive way with our environment has a huge impact on our ability to learn. Some children are overly sensitive to certain sensory stimuli within their classroom (bright lights, loud noises etc.) This may cause the child to over react; appear fearful, hyperactive, controlling or moody. On the other hand, some children may be under sensitive to certain stimuli. This may cause the child to seek out more intense sensory experiences; appear bored, clumsy, inattentive or impulsive. It is also possible to have a combination of these responses and reactions in school. When a student is over or under stimulated it is incredibly hard to focus and learn. The goal of occupational therapy is bring the student, who may be struggling to process all the sensory input in a classroom, to the "just right" state of mind. I have assembled a toolkit of sensational strategies that are effective for children who struggle with sensory processing and getting to that "just right" state. For example, noise cancelling headphones help students who are overstimulated by loud classrooms and hand held fidgets help students who may be under-stimulated to wake up their bodies. When used correctly, these tools can help regulate a student's emotional and physical state. When a student feels in control, calm, and safe, they are able to attend to the classroom curriculum and learn to their fullest potential. Sometimes small adjustments can make a big difference in a student's ability to fully participate at school.
