Color ink truly does help you think. Color pictures are more easily interpreted within areas of the brain responsible for detecting motion, shapes, edges, and transitions. Research tells us that children can name and learn color drawings with significantly higher accuracy rates than black and white line drawings. Color visuals can also help engage students and increase attention to task. These skills are imperative when working to increase expressive and receptive language skills for special needs students within the academic setting. By donating to my project, you will be helping my students find their voice, grow their language skills, and regulate their social-emotional needs. Many of my students rely on picture communication boards to communicate functionally with peers and staff in our school. Communication boards printed in color are vital to help my students identify and discriminate pictures more accuracy when communicating. In addition, our school also works hard to implement a well-researched framework which fosters self-regulation and emotional control through use of colors and visuals. Therapists and educators at my school do not have access to a color printer or color ink. I am lucky to have my own printer in my speech/language therapy room. However, my ink supply is depleted and needs to be replenished as the new school year approaches. I use color ink throughout the school year to print picture cards, language activities, communication boards, and to reinforce social-emotional skills for my students.
