One of my favorite moments came right at the beginning of the year when we first passed out the new colored pencil bags. My co-teacher was almost as excited about them as the students were! It may seem like such a small thing, but having supplies organized and ready for each student makes a huge difference. Instead of spending class time searching for a pencil or trying to find materials, students can grab what they need and get started. The hand sanitizer and wipes have already become part of our daily classroom routine as well, and the candy has been a fun way to celebrate participation, effort, and those little victories that happen throughout the day.\r\n\r\nI was also grateful to receive The Art and Science of Teaching. I love that this project provided something not only for my students, but also something that can help me continue growing as their teacher. I am always looking for better ways to engage students, support different learners, and make my classroom a place where students feel successful. The strategies I learn from this resource will ultimately come right back to the students you helped support.\r\n\r\nAs we move deeper into the school year, my students will be doing much more reading, writing, discussion, and collaborative work. They will be annotating texts, developing their ideas in writing, working with classmates, and tackling increasingly challenging assignments. These supplies will be used over and over again as we do that work. Your generosity helped take care of some of those everyday needs that can easily become barriers in a classroom, and that allows us to spend more of our time doing what really matters—learning, growing, and celebrating student success. We recently used the flour, sugar, and other ingredients to make German pancakes the day after we received them. Students practiced measuring ingredients, following a recipe, working safely in the kitchen, and cooperating with their group. One of the best moments was watching their excitement as the pancakes puffed dramatically in the oven—and, of course, getting to enjoy something delicious they had made themselves.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the shelves stocked with ingredients, they were excited to learn what we would be making. Having these basic supplies readily available has opened the door to many more hands-on cooking experiences and has helped students see that they can successfully create food from scratch.\r\n\r\nOur next project will be homemade pretzel bites. Students will learn how yeast works, practice preparing and kneading dough, and see how a few simple ingredients can be transformed into something entirely new. From there, we plan to move on to breads and other baked goods as students continue building their confidence, independence, and kitchen skills.
