The best way to help struggling readers is to help them develop a positive relationship with reading.
Exposure to many genres will allow my students to discover what they actually enjoy reading and help improve their reading comprehension. I want to build my classroom library with books from various genres in order to meet more of my student's interests and help them develop a better relationship with reading.
Every Friday this school year I will be doing what is called "First Chapter Friday" where I read the first chapter of a book to my students in order to introduce my students to various books. I will also give students time to return and check out new books each week and time to read their new books in class.
I have seen how "First Chapter Fridays" and reading time in class has helped my students become more interested in reading. I am excited to be able to expose my students to many different kinds of books this upcoming school year and help fill in the literacy gaps they have suffered from due to distance learning.
