My students are ambitious and driven students in the St. Louis City who have chosen to come to a Junior Naval ROTC program to build their character and leadership skills. We have a diverse population of students who blend together to create a school community that is nearly like family. Many of my students have many hardships in their lives, but the way that they overcome the obstacles and challenges in their lives is inspiring. Many times, it is unbelievable that such driven, funny, compassionate kids have so many other difficulties that they face each day. Some of these challenges familial situations including children of their own, death of a parent/sibling, incarcerated siblings/parents, extra jobs to help their parents with bills or to fund their futures, or simply transportation to school. Furthermore, my students are involved with so many things at school as well: leadership positions, sports, and/or clubs.
