Through reading and discussing the novel, students are developing vocabulary, analyzing themes, making text-to-self connections, and practicing critical reading and writing skills. The short vignettes in the book are especially helpful for English learners because they make complex ideas accessible while still challenging students to think deeply.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is highly interactive. Students read independently, with partners, and as a whole class while using strategies such as annotation, discussion, and reflective writing. We pause frequently to explore unfamiliar vocabulary, make connections to students' own experiences, and discuss the author's craft. Many students have commented on how much they relate to Esperanza's experiences of identity, family, community, and belonging. Seeing aspects of their own lives reflected in literature has made reading feel more meaningful and engaging.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have been particularly excited by the opportunity to see characters and experiences that mirror elements of their own cultures, languages, and neighborhoods. As we continue our work with the novel, students will use it as inspiration for their own personal narratives and memoir-style writing. They are learning that their stories matter and that their voices deserve to be heard.
