Through our project, students didn't just learn about developmental psychology—they experienced it. Each student created and cared for their own \"sock baby,\" applying concepts from attachment, cognitive development, and caregiving in real time. One especially meaningful moment was watching students connect their observations to Piaget's stages—several students independently identified behaviors like \"egocentrism\" or \"object permanence\" in creative, thoughtful ways as they reflected on their sock baby's \"development.\"\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, the reaction was immediate excitement mixed with curiosity. What could have been a simple activity quickly became something they took pride in—students carefully designed their sock babies, named them, and even created backstories. More importantly, they began to take the responsibility seriously, which deepened their understanding of how real caregiving impacts development and behavior.\r\n\r\nNow, we are building on this experience by connecting their observations to more advanced psychological concepts. Students are working on reflective analyses where they compare their sock baby experience to real-world developmental theories, including attachment styles and parenting approaches. Our next step is a culminating project where students will present how their \"child\" developed over time, supported by psychological evidence and vocabulary.\r\n\r\nYour support didn't just provide materials—it created an immersive learning experience that helped students move from memorizing concepts to truly understanding and applying them. I try to get my students a moment for something related to SEL and often students enjoy competing against each other with games like Chutes and Ladders, Battleship, and the stacking cup game. \r\n\r\nMy students and I also enjoyed the conversation starter cards. Overall the students were genuinely excited, and extremely thankful. Many of them don't always come to class with the supplies they need, so having consistent access to these basic tools created a sense of readiness and inclusion right away. Instead of worrying about borrowing or going without, students were able to fully focus on learning.\r\n\r\nWe recently used these supplies during our propaganda poster project, and the difference was clear. Students used the notebooks and paper to brainstorm ideas and draft their messages, highlighters to identify key themes and persuasive techniques in historical examples, and rulers to carefully plan out their layouts. With access to markers, pens, and pencils, they were able to create detailed, colorful, and thoughtful final posters. The project felt more professional and engaging because every student had the tools they needed.\r\n\r\nStudent reactions were overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed pride in their work and appreciation for having their own materials to use. The quality of their projects improved, but even more importantly, their confidence and participation grew.
