My students now have new things to read for silent reading time (and for pleasure reading at home, if they so choose)! There are a variety of texts from queer authors, women authors, and authors of color. There are also a few classic series' available to expose kids to the world of reading.\r\n\r\nThe books almost filled my entire book shelf, which is so thrilling to see! I have already had students asking if they can \"check out\" and read the books. I am hopeful that every student finds a book they love at some point this year. I hope they find connections in the pages and see themselves in the words printed in the books. I hope reading these books will inspire them to write themselves and become the next generation of writers inspiring young kids like themselves.\r\n\r\nI truly am so thankful for your donations. It is more than money; it is an opportunity for young adults who otherwise might not have had exposure to these books and to the voices within. A lot of the students face so many obstacles outside of school and lack resources. This is one step in the right direction toward equity.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in these children as passionately as I do!","fullyFundedDate":1746786125612,"projectUrl":"project/help-my-high-schoolers-engage-with-poetr/9138616/","projectTitle":"Help my High Schoolers Engage with Poetry and Novels!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Orrell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9366342_orig.jpg?crop=2080,2080,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1740954970410","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9366342"},{"teacherId":9353894,"projectId":8004503,"letterContent":"I am incredibly grateful to the generous donor who purchased pencils and whiteboards for the students in my classroom. These simple yet essential tools make a huge difference in how my students engage with math each day. Having reliable access to writing materials means my students can focus on the lesson rather than worrying about not having what they need. It sends a powerful message to them that someone they've never met believes in their education—and that matters.\r\n\r\nThe whiteboards have especially transformed the way we do math in class. They allow for more collaboration, quick feedback, and hands-on learning that keeps students actively involved. Students feel more confident showing their thinking, trying new strategies, and making mistakes when they know it's easy to erase and try again. It's such a small shift that creates a huge impact, and it wouldn't have been possible without this donation.\r\n\r\nIn a school where many families face financial challenges, having classroom supplies like these available at no cost to students helps level the playing field. Every pencil, every whiteboard, represents a barrier removed and a chance for students to learn in a space where they are supported and equipped. I'm truly thankful for this act of kindness—it has empowered my students and lifted the daily burden from both them and me.","fullyFundedDate":1700549963451,"projectUrl":"project/teacher-mayas-classroom-goals/8004503/","projectTitle":"Teacher Maya’s Classroom Goals","teacherDisplayName":"Mx. My students were able to use the mindfulness books, coloring books and pencils, markers and more to create projects pertaining to college and career readiness, social emotional learning and earn incentives for doing so. The fidget toys were used as incentives for the students and were a huge hit. Thanks to your amazing donation, my students were able to excel in many areas of study and all 25 of my seniors graduated!! This year was a huge accomplishment and I can't wait to continue to use the resources that were received from this amazing donation in the coming years. While many think of technology in schools as something used only for instruction, your contribution supported a different, but equally powerful, use of tech — recognizing and rewarding student commitment through an attendance incentive program.\r\n\r\nEach month, we randomly selected a day to track perfect attendance, and students who were present that day were entered into a drawing. When the winners were announced, students were thrilled — and even more excited when they received their prizes. The use of tech added to the excitement, helping us create moments of surprise and celebration that felt personal and meaningful.\r\n\r\nOne particularly enthusiastic student said, \"This is amazing! I'm never going to miss a day again if you guys are doing events like this!\" Their reaction, echoed by many others, shows how this project helped turn good habits into exciting goals.\r\n\r\nThe next step in our initiative is to build collective motivation. Using our digital tools, we'll now be tracking whole-class attendance, and the class with the highest rate each month will win a group prize. It's already sparking collaboration, friendly competition, and a sense of shared accountability among students.\r\n\r\nYour donation helped us not only promote better attendance — but also build a culture of consistency, celebration, and community. The resources you helped provide were used to create 80 care kits for members of our local unhoused community — an effort that deeply impacted both the students and the individuals they served.\r\n\r\nEach kit was thoughtfully assembled in a drawstring backpack and included gloves, socks, a beanie, granola bars, a reusable water bottle, a hygiene kit, a first aid kit, a hair band, hand warmers, and a pamphlet full of essential community resources — including shelters, food services, mental health care, medical clinics, and places to shower. The care and intention behind every item sparked important discussions in class about dignity, humanity, and social responsibility.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, my students were genuinely moved. Many couldn't believe that someone out there had invested in their ability to make a difference. \"Wow I can't believe we were able to get enough donated to us to make 80 kits!\" One student said while packing a kit — and it was clear that the project meant more than just schoolwork; it was personal, real, and impactful.\r\n\r\nThe 80 completed kits were delivered to JFSA (Jewish Family Service Agency), a local nonprofit that serves unhoused individuals in Las Vegas. JFSA distributed the kits during their monthly community resource event at the Downtown Metropolitan Police Department Center, ensuring they reached people who needed them most.\r\n\r\nThis project has opened the door for continued service learning. After our efforts towards this service project came to an end, my students were asked to reflect on the experience and contemplate other ways in which they can bring awareness and support to other community needs. Thanks to you, they now understand that their voices and actions matter.","fullyFundedDate":1734289133314,"projectUrl":"project/warming-up-and-caring-for-the-community/8991321/","projectTitle":"Warming Up and Caring for the Community!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Effinger","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9597198_orig.jpg?crop=5504,5504,x1018,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1726592760566","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9597198"},{"teacherId":433305,"projectId":9024375,"letterContent":"Thank you again so sincerely for your generosity! The color printer has made our project some much brighter and more exciting and engaging. The latest has been setting up rotation of sample games to teach how expected value works. The students were able to rotate around the room to 'games' printed out and set up on tri-folds that resembled a casino...I am in Vegas. The students read the rules of the game (not real casino games!) and decided which ones they wanted to play based on the win-lose values given. They were very engaged and got a great feel for how expected value works. Most walked away wondering why people go and gamble, most of the games were designed to have them lose...like the casinos!\r\nAnother was working with permutation and the students made their own license plates based on Nevada's requirements for number and letter combinations.
