Biology can often be an abstract and confusing subject. Much of the material we learn cannot be seen easily, which makes it necessary for students to build representations on their own. The basic office supplies, tape, staplers and paper cutter are not things that students normally purchase or carry around with them during the day. The sticky notes allow us to collaborate without the fear of giving the wrong answer in front of the class. The neon markers are a great way for groups to collaborate at their tables and organize their thoughts and understandings on different topics. The hanging file folders are used as a way for students to store examples of their learning and mastery throughout the year. We use these as "good job” reminders and to give them a way to track their learning from beginning to end. With the availability of materials and by promoting an inclusive and engaging environment, the amount of growth these 9th graders undergo is amazing to watch.
