Let's be honest—middle schoolers are always hungry, and sometimes a small snack is exactly what a student needs to get through a long day and refocus on learning. We use snacks to celebrate students who are being especially helpful, taking a risk with their learning, showing kindness, or simply putting in some extra effort.\r\n\r\nThe fidgets are just as popular! Students use them during independent reading, writing, and discussions when they need something to keep their hands busy while their brains are busy learning. It has been wonderful to see students recognize what helps them stay focused and use these tools responsibly. Sometimes the smallest things—a snack, a fidget, or a quick \"I noticed how hard you worked\"—can make a student feel seen and supported.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping make our classroom a place where students can learn, laugh, take risks, and be themselves. Your support allowed me to end the school year on a massive high note. Thanks to you, my eighth graders celebrated their hard work and final milestones with amazing snacks and fun squishy toys. When the large boxes arrived, the students were filled with pure excitement and disbelief. Eighth graders can sometimes act too cool for school, but their faces completely lit up when they saw the variety of snacks and sensory toys. The room erupted into cheers, and they immediately started passing the squishies around to compare colors and shapes. We used these resources to transform our intensive end-of-year review sessions into a celebratory, stress-free environment. A specific moment that stands out was during our final team trivia challenge. The room was buzzing with energy, and every time a team answered a difficult cumulative question correctly, they celebrated by tossing a squishy toy in the air or opening a favorite snack. When the students saw the new smart spots, they leapt at the opportunity to use them. Students preferred the new cushioned seats to the old ones! These seats also help students understand how much space to give others. Second graders are still learning to give others space, so these are a great tool as students can easily visualize their personal bubble.\r\nThe wobble seats are used everyday! Students always ask to use them- sometimes, too many for how many wobble seats we have. I tend to make sure students who are very energetic are the ones who get the priority of the seats. This helps them move more quietly. You would be surprised with how many students struggle to sit still in their chairs! Our chairs are loud and disruptive, so these wobble seats are the best resource.\r\nThe new rug is a great fit for our round floor table! Students were beyond excited to see a new spread of books! I had students gather around my table as I was unboxing the books. Some students already claimed books for their book bags! In my classroom, every student has a book bag with 3 books. They write down the titles; once they finish all the books, they rate one book. I have a pile of book reviews for students to browse through for inspiration. New books created excitement and I hope inspired students to finish their current books so they may exchange their books for new ones. Building passion for reading is essential for second graders, as this is the last year they are taught how to read in the classroom (phonics).\r\nThe books I chose for this project were specifically to diversify my classroom library. My students are students of color, so seeing books with characters that reflect themselves can help them connect to the book. I hope these books can inspire my students to reach for the stars, just like Mae Jemison. My classroom library did not have many historical role models- this project helped change that. I hope to include many of these books in read alouds, specifically correlating to heritage months!! I am so happy to build up my classroom library for my second graders.
