Located in a low socio-economic inner city of Massachusetts, the student population is just over 900 students from very diverse cultural backgrounds. In fact, our school has documented over 65 different languages spoken from all over the world. Our school rotates on a four day schedule, therefore I teach four 60 minute blocks, with approximately 25 students in each block. Each class has mixed abilities, special education and ELL students. As a general education teacher of grade 6, I have three teaching certifications, Elementary Education, Special Education and English as a Second Language. Student resources are outdated, our textbook is 10 years old and we have 2 working computers. My teaching strategies focus on group work, collaboration, visuals and hands on manipulation. It is very common to walk into my class to students standing on the desks in a human chain to create a visual representation of the Nile River flowing in a northern direction due to elevation.
