I am working to create a diverse, multicultural library of novels featuring characters and settings in which my urban students can relate. Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes is a book I read this summer and knew I wanted to bring into my classroom. It is the powerful, emotional story of a young black boy who is killed and the community struggles that come from his death. It is a topic that my students are invested in and this story will help facilitate important conversations and allow them to make connections and insights into a world in which they see themselves.
