Depending on their topic, students explored how heart rate connects to exercise, breathing and relaxation, emotions, hydration, and other aspects of physical and emotional well-being. When the oximeters arrived, students were immediately curious about seeing their own heart rate and oxygen saturation readings. Having real scientific tools in their hands made the project feel more authentic and inspired new questions to investigate.\r\n\r\nStudents then turned that curiosity into research and teaching. In teams, they developed activities that combined what they learned about cardiovascular health and wellness with engaging experiences for their younger peers. For example, students compared heart rate before and after movement, investigated how controlled breathing affected heart rate, and used oximeter readings to help explain how the circulatory and respiratory systems work together.\r\n\r\nUltimately, our 8th graders became the teachers. At our Healthy Hearts Festival, they hosted younger students at their stations, guided them through activities, explained the science behind what they observed, and shared practical ideas for taking care of both body and mind.
