Here at Rogers Park Middle School we have a very large population of students, and more than 50% are females. I am the physical education teacher and the girls often come to the locker room during their menstrual cycle looking for sanitary napkins or tampons.
Since we have a high population of low income families, school is where the female students often get these products. Middle school is the age that most students start going through puberty. They are experiencing many different changes with their body. The females start getting their menstrual cycle, and this often happens for the first time while they are at school. They will come to me looking for sanitary napkins or tampons during this time, and throughout their time here at RPMS. In the past we have received donations of sanitary napkins that I was able to distribute but we have run out of these, and the companies I have contacted do not send donations or samples anymore. These are products that the females need, and I sadly cannot provide the students with them right now. We do not have the funding to provide these products to all the of the females that come to the girls locker room.
Along with sanitary napkins and tampons, the students in the girls locker room often ask if I have deodorant they can use. In middle school body odor can be a very big issue. Since the students are physically active while in PE class, they often need deodorant to use. It is important that I can provide all of these female students with these necessary products.
