I wanted them to experience the joy of helping others and giving back to the community. After I purchased the food for the weekend food bags, I had students help pack the bags by putting in the food items for breakfast, lunch, and snacks and securing the bags. My project focused on providing food for the weekend for students who are food insecure. Weekends can be difficult because students are unable to take advantage of our school's free breakfast and lunches during those days, so we send home a bag of food for them each Friday. We have also had many parents comment that it has been very helpful to them, as a way of supplementing the food they provide for their families. The individual sharpeners and mechanical pencils mean that students no longer have to get up in the middle of class to sharpen their pencils at the (very loud!) electric sharpener! This has really cut down on interruptions and distractions.\r\nThe privacy shields have also been a huge help to the students! They are a great way for students to protect their work when taking a test. They are also a great tool for students who just want a quiet place to work or play. During small group learning and indoor recess, students use the Spot It! game to practice observation, focus, and quick thinking. One memorable moment was when a group of students challenged each other to see who could find the matching symbol first. They were cheering each other on while also sharpening their attention and visual recognition skills.\r\n\r\nThe Tetra Tower stacking blocks and building blocks have been wonderful for teamwork and problem-solving. Students often work together to carefully stack pieces or build creative structures.
