I can't explain why pencils are such a hot commodity in first grade, but they sure are!! There just never seem to be enough of them sharpened and ready to go when we need them! My students receive one pencil per grading period (which means a 6 year old is expected to use the same pencil for 9 weeks!). This may explain the need for pencils! Dry erase markers are also much needed for our daily word building activities! I buy each student one marker for the year, but again, that marker realistically doesn't last! I would love to not have to worry about having enough pencils and dry erase markers to use throughout the year!
