What a little motivation can do! Thanks to you our mathematicians were fired up for the Prodigy National Cup. We came together as a school to answer math questions correctly and students were celebrated for continuing their learning journey at home with daily shout outs each morning at school. The past two weeks brought me so much joy to connect with students from classes across our campus as they came to collect their orange swag for going above and beyond in the competition. The past two weeks have been a blast! \r\n\r\nIt was so rewarding to see the smiles as the students would swing by my classroom after the shout outs to pick their prize. They loved having choices and it was so nice to be able to offer a snack to those who wanted food to fuel their mind or a fidget to fiddle with. They couldn't wait answer more math questions to see if they'd get another shout out to return for more! \r\n\r\nTaco 'bout awesome! The book Tracking Trash: Flotsam, Jetsam, and the Science of Ocean Motion was a great way to spark a conversation around trash and the impact it has on our environment. We then put on our gloves, grabbed our gear, and headed out across our campus to put a wrap on wrappers! \r\n\r\nMany hands make light work and with 32 fourth graders those wrappers didn't stand a chance! From the nooks and crannies of the walkways, to being buried in the bushes, these fourth graders found them all. They teamed up to make a difference and make our campus a cleaner place. \r\n\r\nWhen we returned to our classroom after our outdoor adventure, the crew reflected on our experience. My students shared how was insightful it was for them to see the amount of wrappers recovered even though there are weekly reminders to keep snacks at the lunch area and put trash in the trash cans. They truly felt they were making a difference on our campus. We even talked about making this a classroom job for the upcoming year to have a clean up crew sweep the campus for wrappers weekly. These experiences help foster confidence, independence, and a sense of pride as students actively contribute to their school community in visible and meaningful ways.\r\n\r\nThe snack cart also creates valuable opportunities for students to strengthen receptive and expressive language skills within natural settings. When we set out to practice for our performance we borrowed a bluetooth speaker from a teacher across campus which was awfully kind of her to offer although it was a bit tricky when she was away on a field trip or her class was using the speaker at the same time. That is why this speaker came just in the nick of time to save the day for our performance! The This or That books are crowd pleasers. My fourth graders love pairing up and reading them together. What I love even more is conversation that stems from the decisions they make when they choose this or that while reading. What a meaningful way to justify their thinking and engage in academic conversations!\r\n\r\nOur class also discovered that the picture book Erosion: How Hugh Bennett Saved America's Soil and Ended the Dust Bowl was the perfect book to connect our reading unit which included the Dust Bowl to our science unit on Earth Changes.
