As the new classroom teacher I want to create a classroom community and culture where are my students feel heard and seen; in both our academic and social experiences. Part of this will come from a library they are excited about and drawn to. Help me give my students an updated, expanded library that reflects themselves, their experiences, and their interests. By reading books such as Joey Pigza and Best Friends they will have the opportunity to connect with characters from similar backgrounds, with similar interests, and even similar challenges. These books also give them opportunities to broaden their awareness and build empathy by walking in the shoes of characters whose experiences are different from their own.
