When the boxes arrived filled with everything from DNA models and specialized cancer cell microscope slides to fruit fly kits, my students were so excited. For many of them, getting to look at actual tissue slides and build tangible DNA structures bridges the gap between textbook concepts and real-world science. They were incredibly eager to dive in, and having quality tools like the paper shredder, zipper pouches, and colored pencils has made organizing our daily labs and activities seamless.\r\nBeyond the amazing scientific exploration, the snack boxes, Oreos, and sour candies have completely transformed our classroom dynamic. I have been using these treats as high-motivation rewards for participation, hard work, and academic milestones. It has been amazing to see how a simple bag of Takis or Sour Patch Kids can instantly energize the room and get students excited to tackle tough science challenges. Even the hand sanitizer and essential supplies have kept our workspace clean and ready for hands-on learning every single day.\r\nOur next steps are to integrate the fruit fly kits into our upcoming genetics unit, allowing students to track traits in real-time just like true lab scientists. With our new equipment, the learning has shifted from theoretical to hands-on. Students aren't just reading about focal lengths or shutter speeds; they are adjusting settings in real-time to capture a game-winning shot or a candid moment in the hallway. \r\n\r\nThe \"wow\" factor for the students was, quite simply, access. Previously, the entire staff had to share a single camera, which created a \"waiting list\" for creativity. The most exciting moment was seeing their faces when they realized we had multiple kits. They no longer felt like students playing with a hobby; they felt like a professional press team. Having their own gear at an event gave them a sense of authority and pride that translated directly into the quality of their work.\r\n\r\nWhile the whole class benefited, we saw a remarkable shift in our introverted students. For some who find traditional social interaction daunting, the camera became a bridge. Having a camera in hand gave these students a 'purpose' at social events. We watched them transform from quiet observers into active participants, confidently navigating crowds to get the perfect shot. It gave them a voice without them having to say a word.\r\n\r\nWe officially submitted our yearbook at the end of March—a feat that would not have been possible without this equipment. They had fun testing out the five new glazing techniques I presented to them. After testing out the five techniques the students then chose which one they wanted to apply to their drape pot projects. The underglazes that donors provided were the most helpful in these techniques. Working with underglazes also proved a new concept to students in regards to coloring a piece of clay. \r\n\r\nThe regular glazes are always appreciated also. In past school years our ceramics department was not able to afford glazes. This meant that student's projects went unglazed and therefore unfinished. I think this contributed to a lack of motivation amongst ceramics students. Now that students have the ability to not only add color to their art work but also make their art into functional pieces, they feel more proud of what they are doing. \r\n\r\nAs for the kiln shelf supports, I appreciate them greatly.
