It gave students the opportunity to combine photography, design, science, and experimentation into a creative process. The excitement started right away when students saw their first images appear after exposure to sunlight and water. There was definitely a lot of \"wow factor\" happening around the classroom.\r\n\r\nStudents loved experimenting with exposure times, layering objects, creating ghosting effects, and trying double exposures. One of the things that made this project so engaging was that there was always an element of surprise. Students couldn't just follow a formula, they had to observe, troubleshoot, and make adjustments when a print didn't turn out exactly as planned. It became an awesome opportunity to problem solve and troubleshoot.\r\n\r\nWe've completed our traditional cyanotype prints, but the project isn't over! Students will now transform one print into a mixed-media artwork, use another as the foundation for a Photoshop project, and continue experimenting with alternative techniques using turmeric, salt, soap bubbles, baking soda, and lemon juice to see how they affect the final image.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students the chance to explore a process that none had ever experienced before. There is an excitment in the classroom! \r\n\r\nBefore receiving these materials, students had to share our limited number of Gelli plates. With 50-minute class periods, that often meant students only had a small amount of time to experiment with printing before class ended. Thanks to your generosity, every student now has access to their own Gelli plate during class.\r\n\r\nThe difference is incredible. Students were immediately excited because they each got to dedictate the entire class period to printmaking all by themselves. They got to create with color, texture, layering, and pattern. Instead of waiting for a turn, they were able to spend the entire class period creating,\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, my students have been able to fully engage in a professional printmaking process and build problem-solving skills, and confidence as artists. This wasn't just a one-day activity... it's turned into something they're completely hooked on. Students who don't always connect right away to traditional projects are all in, focused, patient, proud, and honestly a little obsessed (in the best way).\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was when I first put the wool out. Students were so excited to see more wool as we had run out of the first order. They have been busy making tiny animals, characters, food, little weird creatures... you name it.\r\n\r\nRight now, we're taking it even further. Students are photographing their felted creations and bringing them into Photoshop to create surreal visual stories. So now their handmade object becomes part of a bigger art project. They can have their creations floating in the sky, giant in a city, telling a story that's imaginative and personal. Watching them connect hands-on making with digital design has been incredible.\r\n\r\nNext up, they'll be refining those compositions and really pushing their storytelling. They are thinking about juxtaposition, scale, dislocation, levitation, and metamorphosis, all the characteristics of surrealism. It's such an awesome blend of creativity and skill-building.\r\n\r\nThis project didn't just provide materials; it created excitement, and confidence. When those printing plates, stencils, and inks arrived, you should have seen the looks on my students' faces, pure excitement. For most of them, this was their first time trying out monoprinting, and they dove right in with so much energy and creativity.\r\nYou can see from the photos the classroom was buzzing the moment we got started. Students were experimenting with layering colors, markmaking, and using the stencils to build these intricate, rhythmic patterns. It was so rewarding to see them really start to grasp important design concepts like contrast, balance, and positive/negative space just through the process of printmaking.\r\nWhat was most inspiring was watching students who normally struggle with traditional art materials suddenly feel confident and empowered. The monoprinting was such an accessible, hands-on way for them to understand these abstract ideas. I had kids coming up to me, beaming with pride over the one-of-a-kind prints they'd made.\r\nEven beyond the sheer enjoyment factor, I'm already seeing these design skills transfer over to my students' other graphic design work. They're thinking more intentionally about composition, texture, and layering.\r\nThis project has been transformative, giving my diverse, hands-on learners an engaging entry point into the world of design.
